Ed
began photography in the military service
where he covered assignments in Florida,
California, Wyoming, Japan and the Philippines. After
four years, Ed
was Hon. discharged and
began as an assistant photographer for Fran Burn in
Chicago. (Frans
studio was located over the famous Ricardos restaurant.)
Ed covered many assignments for Fran. His main client
was "CBS of
Chicago" & the Chicago
Bears; they both kept us very busy.
After about two years, Ed was hired by another great
studio; Valentino
Sarra; I'm sure a familiar
name to some of the largest advertising agencies in
Chicago and New
York.
Ed remembers that on his 1st day at Sarra's studio,
he had to report,
to the
salt flats of Utah to assist in shooting an
assignment for Good Year
tires - Mickey Thompson - a
race car driver, was trying to break the land speed
record in his
Thunderbird car; he averaged
over 400 miles an hour and was successful in breaking
the record.
After assisting for Sarra, for a couple of years, Ed
was hired by
World Book
Encyclopedia and Science Year book where he
photographed hundreds of
assignments, literally
from A to Z. Subjects ranging from classic cars, open
heart surgery,
pictorial
of Mark Twain and for many other interesting articles
in their books.
Today, Ed still realizes that "World Book"
was a great school for him.
He appreciated and liked
the challenge of shooting "different
things"... and that's what he did
for all of those years. "It is
hard to follow the new mode of specialization as he
says. The
important thing is to do your best
to obtain the positive results with excellence.. That
is the most
rewarding feeling you can give to
yourself.
Ed was at World Book for about nine years, worked
with over 50
artists, and many editors. He was
the only in house photographer they had at the time,
and the staff was
pleased with his work." It
was a great gig; lots of good times" he says.
Over the years, many of
the staff artist moved on from
World Book but they still kept in touch with Ed; many
of them gave Ed
assignments
from their new companies.
Ed left World Book to open an advertising studio in
Chicago where he
photographed many
product shots both with and without models. He had
great clients ;when
it came to product
assignments, Chicago was known as a "product'
town in those days.
(Please see my client list.)
After many years in Chicago, Ed decided to follow an
old dream that he
had: being an avid
hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, he always
gravitated to the
northwoods, knowing that
someday he would make "the big move" and he
did. He constructed a
studio in the Northwoods
of Wisconsin, in the town of Boulder Junction, famous
for its fishing
lakes, and majestic woods.
Ed has been based in Wisconsin for about twenty
years. See our Studio
page for more
information...
Ed and his wife Rosa visit Puerto Rico frequently.
Rosa is from a
small town
of the island. She assists Ed in designing cards and
in stock
photography. In addition, Rosa was a
bilingual teacher and does creative writing in
English and in Spanish
for many of their cards and
other publications. (Visit our card & print
links.)
Ed has made many good friends in Puerto Rico and has
acquired several
good clients there.
When he visits Puerto Rico he likes visiting
different towns and is
always shooting for his stock
files, in addition to his photo assignments.
He is most inspired and attracted by the Campesino or
Jibaro in the
rural areas: their rustic hands,
interesting faces... but most of all, for the simple
beauty of their
hearts. (See PUERTO RICO
Gallery-People.)
